It focuses on the various potentials of the new medium of 3D reconstructions for research and gives detailed insight into important projects of 3D models of historical architecture from the 1980s until the 2010s. Essential questions and needs of action in the areas of visualization of hypotheses, long-term archiving and documentation of the reconstruction process are discussed. For the scientific community this book serves as a sound basis to contextualize digital 3D models of historical architecture in the field of research questions, important needs for action and initiating future projects.

Dissertation by Heike Messemer, 2020, book cover, CC BY-NC-ND 4.0

The book is published as volume 3 of the series “Computing in Art and Architecture” and is available as open access publication on the website of arthsitoricum.net under the following link: https://doi.org/10.11588/arthistoricum.516
The book is also available as print on demand under the same link.

Heike Messemer studied art history, theatre studies and ethnology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich and received her doctorate at the Institute of Art History at LMU under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Stephan Hoppe and Prof. Dr. Hubertus Kohle.
